Smart Queue: take a number from your phone and leave the line

Customers scan a QR code, pick a service and get a number. They can wait anywhere: the phone counts down the people ahead and tells them when it’s their turn and which counter to go to.

A Smart Queue ticket on a phone: number R-015 for repair, 4 people ahead, about 12 minutes, with a progress bar from waiting to done.
The problem

Waiting in line means you can’t leave

Paper numbers, shouting and a crowded waiting room.

Clinics, phone-repair shops, banks and service counters in Phnom Penh still run their queues with paper numbers and a raised voice. Customers can’t step out for a coffee without risking their place.

The waiting room fills up, people ask the staff how much longer, and the ones who give up leave without being served.

What it does

From scan to counter, without standing in line

Every part of the demo works. Try it on your own phone.

  • Take a number by QR

Pick a service and get a number. No app to install.

  • Live position

People ahead and an estimated wait, updated as the line moves.

  • Called on the phone

A full-screen message with the counter, and a buzz where the phone allows.

  • Waiting-room screen

Now serving and the next numbers, for any TV or monitor.

  • One tap for staff

Call next per counter, recall a number, or call automatically.

  • Khmer and English

On the customer’s phone and on the board.

Screens from the demo

  • Smart Queue waiting-room screen for Sokha Phone Repair: R-012 is now serving at counter 1 and R-011 at counter 2, with an average wait of 10 minutes and the next numbers P-007, R-013, C-004 and R-014, next to a QR code to take a number.

The waiting-room screen, with the QR code to take a number.

  • A full-screen green message on a phone: It’s your turn, counter 1, number R-015, with an I’m on my way button.

When they’re called, the phone says where to go.

How it’s built

Simple parts, chosen to last

The same stack we use for client projects.

  • Next.js
  • React
  • Server-Sent Events
  • QR tickets
  • Built with Next.js and React, so the ticket works in the browser on any phone and the board runs on any screen.
  • The board and every phone update over Server-Sent Events, so a call reaches the customer about a second after staff tap the button.
  • Numbers run per service, like R for repair and P for pick-up, and each queue is private and closes on its own after two hours.
  • In the demo the queue starts with a few made-up customers, and the Telegram alert is simulated.
