Booking: customers book a time and pay a deposit, so they show up

Customers pick a service, a stylist and a free time from their phone, then pay a small KHQR deposit. The booking lands on the salon’s calendar a second later, and a no-show costs the customer the deposit.

Paying the deposit on a phone: a haircut with Bopha on Thursday 29 October at 12:30, the time held for 5:00, and a KHQR code for 3.00 USD with a Simulate payment button.
The problem

Bookings by message, and no-shows nobody pays for

Facebook messages, phone calls and empty chairs.

Most salons, spas, clinics and barbers in Phnom Penh take bookings by Facebook message and phone. Someone has to answer every message, check the book and reply, often late at night.

When a customer doesn’t turn up, the slot is lost and the stylist sits idle. Without a deposit, booking costs nothing, so missing it costs nothing either.

What it does

From a free time to a paid booking

Every part of the demo works. Try it on your own phone.

  • Free times only

Each service fits its length, before closing, around every other booking.

  • Pick a stylist or anyone

“Anyone” books the first stylist free at that time.

  • Small KHQR deposit

Kept on a no-show. The rest is paid at the salon.

  • No double bookings

A time is held for 5 minutes while one phone pays.

  • Live calendar

Bookings land on the salon’s screen a second after they’re paid.

  • Khmer and English

On the customer’s phone and on the calendar.

Screens from the demo

  • Booking calendar for Bopha Beauty on Thursday 29 October: columns for the stylists Bopha, Dara and Srey Leak from 9:00, filled with bookings like Sopheak, haircut, and Pisey, manicure, each marked Deposit paid, next to a QR code to book.

The salon’s calendar, a second after a new booking landed.

  • A booking confirmation on a phone: Thursday 29 October, 12:30 to 13:00, with Bopha for a haircut. Deposit $3 paid, pay $5 at the salon, with an Add to calendar button.

The confirmation, with the rest to pay at the salon.

How it’s built

Simple parts, chosen to last

The same stack we use for client projects.

  • Next.js
  • React
  • Server-Sent Events
  • KHQR deposits
  • Built with Next.js and React, so booking works in the browser on any phone and the calendar runs on the salon’s laptop or tablet.
  • The free times come from one small, tested function that checks each service’s length, closing time and every booking and hold. The server checks again before it holds a time, so two phones can’t book the same slot.
  • The calendar updates over Server-Sent Events, and staff tap a booking to mark it Arrived or No-show.
  • In the demo the calendar starts with made-up bookings, payment by KHQR is simulated and no money moves, and the Telegram reminder is simulated.
